Pontycymer Nursery Bridgend, Mosaic
How it was made:
1. The main materials used to make the mosaic included
wood for the base, wood for the frame and tiles to make
the picture on the base. The base and frame were cut into
the correct shape and painted with undercoat paint. They
were left to dry and then painted with gloss white paint.
The base was varnished.
2. Once the varnish had dried the base was turned over
and scored with a knife so that the adhesive and tiles
would stick down better to the board.
3. The frame was attached to the base and the border of
sixty diamonds were the first tiles to be stuck down using tiling adhesive
4. ‘Pontycymer Nursery School’ wording was made using
the indirect method. This method involves sticking the
tiles face down onto brown paper and then sticking the
paper with the tiles down on the board.
5. The wording in red tiles ‘Olympic Games 2012
Queen’s Jubilee’ was then made also using the indirect method
6. The picture of the children’s pictures (the royal girl, the
queen and the Olympic girl) was then drawn out in black
marker pen on the board.
7. Tiles were then added to make the bodies and then the faces and flags.
8. The flags were completed. The girl on the left holds a
flag with a crown and the number 60. This is to represent
the Queen’s diamond jubilee. The other flag held by the
girl on the right depicts the Olympic symbol to represent
the Olympic Games (in the shape of the numbers 2012)
taking place that year.
9. The bunting was outlined with black marker pen on the
board first and then small red, white and blue tiles were
glued down.
10. The red letters were surrounded by small white tiles to
help the lettering stand out.
11. The completed mosaic was then grouted and left for
three days to dry. Eight holes were then drilled around
the border to allow bolts to be attached to the wall for
hanging. The mosaic was then sealed using liquid sealer
and given a final clean. Above is the draft design next to the finished mosaic.
